The Necessity of Sex Education for Adolescents from the Perspective of Male Health
To cultivate well-rounded, knowledgeable, and cultured individuals, a reasonable and comprehensive knowledge structure is essential, and sexual morality education is one aspect of this. Renowned pediatric health expert Ye Gongshao pointed out: "Some teenagers don't understand the normal phenomena that occur during puberty, leading to feelings of guilt and repression. When parents and schools fail to provide explanations and guidance, this can lead some to suicidal thoughts." One expert once said: "It's impossible to prevent teenagers from acquiring sexual knowledge. If teenagers don't receive sexual knowledge at school and at home, they will seek knowledge in society, which can easily lead them astray."
Although teenagers have developed sexual awareness, this awareness is still extremely immature and blind, harboring significant risks and dangers. Due to their young age and lack of knowledge, experience, and rationality, they often handle problems improperly, easily suffering physical and mental harm. Therefore, it is necessary to guide, enlighten, and correct the immature sexual awareness of teenagers, ensuring they adhere to the norms of sexual morality.
Due to improved living standards and the influence of socio-cultural development, the physical maturation period for adolescents has generally arrived earlier. The increase in height and weight, and the appearance of secondary sexual characteristics, are occurring earlier with each generation. In contrast, some children and adolescents have lower levels of moral judgment and more confused moral emotions. Furthermore, with fewer children in families, material desires are more easily satisfied, leading to a fragile and incomplete moral will among adolescents.
With the earlier onset of sexual maturity, the contradiction between the immense physiological impact unique to puberty and the relatively weak moral and ethical concepts and will of younger adolescents becomes increasingly prominent. Surveys show that current adolescents' concern for sex and early romantic relationships are far more prevalent than before. Children and adolescents are also exhibiting more behaviors that deviate from normal standards in their relationships with the opposite sex. These are new situations and new problems in adolescent sex education that urgently need to be addressed.
A survey of 112 students at a middle school in Shanghai regarding their sex education revealed that 29% learned about it from books and magazines, and 57% from their friends. The vast majority of this information from these sources was incomplete or inaccurate.
Boys typically experience nocturnal emissions starting in puberty, a purely physiological phenomenon without harm. However, the "knowledge" children gain from hearsay or novels often includes claims like "semen is the essence of the body" or "one drop of semen is worth ten drops of blood." This anxiety, stemming from concerns about health yet the inability to completely eliminate nocturnal emissions, leads to fear and anxiety, hindering studies and genuinely impacting health. In some cases, it can cause feelings of inferiority and other psychological problems, potentially affecting marital sex life and even family happiness.
Girls often experience similar ignorance upon their first menstruation. A few receive guidance or specific help from their mothers or sisters, but very few truly understand menstrual hygiene. Many female students are embarrassed to admit they are menstruating during physical education classes or manual labor, forcing themselves to engage in strenuous activities or even participate in sports competitions. This increases the chances of developing menstrual disorders, dysmenorrhea, and other problems, affecting both their health and studies.
While sexual offenses during adolescence are rare, they deserve societal attention. Data from Shanghai shows that among teenagers committing sexual offenses, females are mostly 14-15 years old, and males are mostly 15-16 years old. The factors contributing to sexual crimes are multifaceted, but a significant portion of these crimes could be avoided if sex education during adolescence is emphasized.
Everyone goes through puberty. Besides biological factors, humans also possess social characteristics. Providing necessary education during adolescence, when one is becoming a social being, is crucial, and this naturally includes sex education. At this time, the body is undergoing sexual maturation, experiencing certain desires and responses in sexual matters, requiring support. Providing assistance at this stage can be highly effective and beneficial throughout life. Sex education provided at this stage will have a positive impact on future healthy development and the establishment of correct values and morals (including sexual morality). Sex education for teenagers is not only about explaining basic sexual knowledge, but more importantly, about equipping them with sexual morality, self-control, and how to channel their youthful energy into work and studies.
Currently, sex education in my country is far from adequate, for various reasons, with traditional feudalistic ideas playing a major role. China is a country with a long history, and traditional feudalistic ideas have a long history. Parents are often embarrassed to talk to their children about human physiology and hygiene, especially about sexual organs. In fact, the human reproductive organs are part of the entire human body, just like other parts, and there is nothing shameful about it. Parents should recognize that sex education for teenagers is an undeniable responsibility, and this education will have a significant impact on their future development.
Of course, it is impossible and unnecessary to give children a comprehensive and detailed explanation of human reproductive organs and the entire human physiology. Parents' education in this area should be logical, natural, and concise. For example, when parents learn that their daughter has started menstruating, they can explain what menstruation is and teach menstrual hygiene. If the child happens to be present with information about sex from television, radio, newspapers, or magazines, parents can naturally discuss it. This natural approach to education makes it easier for children to accept and is more effective.
Given the flexibility of family education, systematic education in schools becomes even more important. Schools offer superior conditions for sex education. With a large group of peers attending a course that includes human reproductive organs as part of a physiology curriculum, students will receive a more systematic and comprehensive understanding of physiological hygiene, including sexual knowledge. In this sense, schools should bear the primary responsibility for sex education for adolescents.
Sex education involves a balance. Sexual knowledge and sexual morality are two equally important components. Introducing sexual knowledge must be appropriate; introducing only sexual knowledge without discussing sexual morality is a one-sided and harmful approach. Sex education must never involve explicit discussions of sexual experiences. Sex education should be gradual, planned, cautious, and measured. The purpose of introducing sexual knowledge is to help students understand themselves and correctly deal with the physiological phenomena that occur during puberty. Emphasizing sexual morality involves using moral norms to restrain one's physiological desires and to abide by laws and regulations. Sex education that does not take this purpose as its starting point will not achieve good objective results, and any educational content or form that violates this principle should be corrected.
